Money in Sarajevo and Bosnia

Durable money advice.

Money in Sarajevo and Bosnia

Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark, BAM. Carry some BAM cash for small cafes, markets, taxis, parking and mountain stops. Cards are common in larger hotels, malls and many restaurants, but do not rely on cards everywhere.

Travel tipsExplore services

Plan at a glance

The official currency is the Bosnia and Herzegovina convertible mark, code BAM; do not hardcode a live exchange rate.

Carry some BAM cash for small purchases, markets, parking, taxis and stops outside central areas.

Cards are common but not universal; check the amount and currency before approving a terminal or ATM transaction.

BAM, euro and exchange

Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark, internationally coded BAM. Some businesses may quote or accept euros, but visitors should not assume euro payment or change in euros. Use a bank or clearly identified exchange office and review the displayed terms before exchanging.

Cash or card?

A mixed approach is practical. Cards work in many hotels, malls and restaurants, while cash remains useful for smaller cafés, markets, parking, taxis and rural or mountain stops. Keep smaller notes and avoid carrying all money in one place.

ATMs and changing rates

ATM fees, conversion offers and card-provider charges vary. Read every screen, prefer charging in BAM when your bank handles conversion transparently, and decline any option you do not understand. Sarajevo Visit & Go never presents a hardcoded exchange rate as current.
